I also think that if you learn how to do it this way and then switch to an IDE later, you'll have a much clearer understanding of what the IDE is doing under the hood. The CLI tools/text editor route is harder to set up and get going (though there's lots of documentation and guides out there) but you'll be "closer to the metal" so to speak and gain a better understanding of the steps of compilation/linking/debugging/etc. You will learn how the language works and how a specific IDE works, not how, say, the compiler tools and such work. The IDE route, like CodeBlocks (free) or CLion ($$$) will get you producing software quickly at the expense of not really understanding how the tools underneath it work. If you're a beginner, there are two schools of thought on what you should start with. I like my setup and I have spent a long time adapting it to my specific work. Because I use command line compilers, (gcc, mingw, etc.) and command line build tools (make, meson) it suits my needs. Both have similar levels of configurability and extensibility (for my purposes, anyway). I was a diehard emacs guy forever until VS Code came along. You then configure your tasks.json file to call the compiler.

If you want to use it for C, you install the C/C++ extension. It doesn't contain a compiler unto itself. Let's start with unpacking your question first: GCC is a compiler, Visual Studio Code is a text editor that can integrate with a wide variety of other development tools.

Not that strange stuff that Vim does, or the even stranger stuff that Emacs does. Again, I started programming in the 90's (on Windows), so ctrl+c and ctrl+v are baked into my brain.
